We often see it pop up in Facebook groups. Should you wash your hair twice? The answer is not black and white. In this blog, we briefly explain what is useful to do.
Why wash your hair twice?
Not only in Facebook groups, but also in online communities such as Reddit and the like, the advice is to wash your hair twice. The purpose of shampoo is to clean your hair and scalp. Proponents of the “rule” of washing twice argue that shampoo works better if you wash twice. Your head will feel cleaner and dirt will be rinsed away more effectively.
Is there scientific evidence?
Unfortunately, no scientific studies have been conducted to determine whether washing twice is actually better. Dermatologists do say that double cleansing is recommended for people with oily skin, people who use a lot of products, or people who wash their hair less often.
My own experience with double shampooing
Apart from the above, personal preference also plays a role. I (Eline) tried double shampooing for a while, but it made no difference to me. For example, I use a deep cleansing wash every 5/6 weeks and I find that one good shampoo is really enough. There are also curlies who are used to washing twice with shampoo and find that it works well, so you should definitely continue to do so.
Conclusion
In short: there is no evidence that it works better. The number of times you wash your hair per week, how many products you use and your hair type play a major role in whether or not you want to incorporate this into your routine.
