Clarifying Shampoos

There are many different shampoos for curly hair. They can often be divided into categories. A clarifying shampoofalls under the category of deep cleansing shampoos. There are also mild and very mild shampoos, such as a co-wash. Good to know: clarifying shampoos are often not CG Proof and therefore do not fit within the Curly Girl Method.

What is a clarifying shampoo?

A clarifying shampoo is a very strong cleanser for your hair. These shampoos usually contain sulfates or sulfate-like ingredients. A final wash is also a type of clarifying shampoo. Sulfates are the strongest ingredients, also known as cleansing agents, for washing your hair. They are also often used in other products such as (hand) soap and cleaning products.

When should you use a clarifying shampoo?

There are several reasons to use a clarifying shampoo from time to time. For example, if you are prone to build-up or if you wash your hair less than 2 to 3 times a week. Your hair can become dull or lifeless more quickly because products build up.

When is a clarifying shampoo useful?

• You have fine hair
• You have wavy (type 2) hair that quickly loses its shape
• You often use a lot of styling products
• If your hair is dull
• If your hair is difficult to style
• Your hair loses its shape
• You regularly wash your hair with a co-wash
  
• You live in an area with hard water

How often should you use a clarifying shampoo?

We recommend using a clarifying shampoo at least once a month. Do you have fine hair or do you use a lot of styling products? Then it is better to use the shampoo once every two weeks.

Are sulfates or strong cleansing shampoos bad?

As long as you use the shampoo occasionally and always use a conditioner or hair mask after washing, it is not harmful to your hair. Do you want to give your hair extra protection while washing? Then apply a little hair oil to the lengths of your hair beforehand.

How do you use a deep cleansing shampoo?

You use this shampoo just like you would a ‘normal shampoo’. Follow these steps:

1. Wet your hair thoroughly.
2. Apply the shampoo to the palm of your hand. Then rub it between your hands to distribute it evenly.
3. Massage the shampoo into your scalp.
4. Make sure to cover the lengths of your hair as well.
5. Rinse thoroughly.
6. Follow with a conditioner or hair mask
