Every now and then we see this question arise: can your hair products affect acne? The answer is: yes, you can. Are you bothered by this? Then we are happy to help you with this blog.
The standard 'tune'
Acne is a problem that can be caused by various factors. Unfortunately, as the writer of this blog, I also suffer from it. If you search the internet, you often come across 'standard' solutions. However, I think it is important to mention them in this blog. Because, who knows, maybe one of the things below is something you're not doing yet, or it's something you didn't think could affect acne.
- Do you drink enough water every day?
- Do you suffer from stress?
- Do you eat healthy enough?
- Have you recently changed detergent?
- Do you perhaps drink too much coffee in one day?
- Are you taking the pill, using another method of contraception, or have you recently stopped using contraception?
- Do you shower immediately after exercising? If sweat stays on your body for too long, you are more likely to develop acne.
Always consult your doctor or the internet if you want more general tips on how to reduce acne or to find out what other factors are. Have you tried everything and do you feel that your hair products are having an influence? Then read on!
Hair products and their influence on your skin
Our hair products are formulated with all kinds of ingredients. You've probably looked at the back. Many ingredients probably mean nothing to you. And that makes sense: because it is quite difficult to figure all this out. Every skin is different and reacts differently. Even if a bottle says 'dermatologically tested' or 'natural', it says nothing about how your skin reacts to the product. With the following tips you may be able to adjust your routine in terms of products but also the way you wash, for example, to reduce acne.
Tips for acne on your back and scalp
Acne caused by hair products often forms on the hairline, cheeks or on the back.
1. Rinse out your shampoo and conditioner differently
Do you suffer from acne on your back? Try rinsing the shampoo and conditioner out of your hair differently while washing. So, do not let the shampoo and conditioner rinse over your back, but rather bend your head forward to avoid contact with the skin as much as possible.
2. Cover your back while styling
Are you going to get started styling your hair? Make sure your back is always covered with a shirt, towel or bathrobe. As long as your back is covered so that products cannot touch your back.
3. Always wash your back with soap
Did your back make contact when you rinsed out your shampoo or conditioner? Then make sure you always rinse your back with soap. Preferably one with a cleaner. You can often recognize a cleaner in the ingredients by the word: sulphates. Most types of soaps have this ingredient.
4. Clean your face after styling
Do you suffer from acne at the hairline? Then make sure you always clean your head with a cleanser, tonic or other suitable product.
5. Put your hair up
Do you have a conditioner or mask in your hair and need it to be absorbed? Then don't let your hair rest on your back. If necessary, take an elastic band and put it in a bun or secure it with a clip. As long as you don't let her touch your back.
6. You can't tolerate fragrances
Many products contain fragrances in different forms: they can be synthetic but also natural (such as essential oil). Linalool is also a well-known one, or geraniol. Perhaps your skin cannot tolerate this: you can also have this tested by your doctor.
7. Scan your items
Some products contain substances that can irritate your skin. One person can safely use it while another gets itchy, bumps, rash or acne. Search for inci decoder on Google to check whether your product contains ingredients that may cause irritation.
8. You can't tolerate cocamidopropyl betaine
Coco...what?! This is a cleaner in a shampoo that some curlies cannot tolerate. Read more about cocamidopropyl betaine here .
8. Switch products
Remove a product from your routine and replace it with a different variant. For example, start with your shampoo, conditioner and possibly mask.
Ultimately, it takes a lot of trial and error to see what works for you and what doesn't. Hopefully these tips are useful to you! Do you have questions or comments? Feel free to let us know below!
