Do you have frizzy, dry or unmanageable hair? Caring for curls or waves can be a challenge. The right products and routine can make all the difference. Did you know that using the right products in the right way can make your hair look better and last longer? We'll show you exactly where to start to find the best products to care for your curls!

Caring for curly hair is different from caring for straight hair. Curls are more fragile and if you have less defined curls, improper care can cause your hair to fall between straight and curly, making it more frizzy. Did you know that curly hair is often naturally drier? Of course, this is not true for everyone, but it is good to know that curls need the right care to stay beautiful.

A handy guide for your routine is the CG method. This method teaches you to get to know your curls better, to use hair products in a specific order and to choose products without drying alcohol and strong sulphates. By caring for your hair in the right way, you will get healthier, shinier and better defined hair.

The basics of curly hair care

The care of curly hair can be divided into three categories: washing (cleansing), moisturising and conditioning, styling and protecting.

#1 Washing your curls

Proper cleansing is essential for the healthy balance of your hair and scalp. You can safely wash your curls two to three times a week. Washing less often? If so, you may find that product builds up in your hair. There are several shampoos that will gently cleanse your hair and help keep your scalp fresh.

#2 Moisturise and condition

Moisturising is an important part of your routine. Always use a conditioner or mask after you wash your hair. Why? When you wash your hair, your cuticles open up from the moisture and shampoo. A conditioner or mask helps to close them again, so your hair is less likely to dry out. Always rinse out completely before styling.

#3 Styling

The way you style your curls has a big impact on the end result. With the right styling products, you can keep your curls looking great for longer, reduce frizz and add shine. There are different types of stylers, such as gels and mousses, to suit different hair types and needs.

#4 Protect

Did you know that protection is also an important part of your hair care routine? Your hair can be particularly vulnerable at night. Use a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce friction or wear a satin cap to keep your curls in shape. It's also important to use a good brush to detangle your hair and to choose hair ties that won't damage your curls.

Different curl types and product advice

Wavy hair (type 2)

Do you have wavy hair? Then it is important to use light products. Choose light conditioners and hair masks without too many oils and butters. Heavy products can weigh down your waves and cause them to sag.

Spiral curls (type 3)

Do you have stronger curls or type 3 hair? Then your hair products can be a little richer. Products with oil and butter will help nourish your hair and lock in moisture. A cream and/or leave-in conditioner is a good base. It is also advisable to use a hair mask once a week for extra care.

Coily hair (type 4)

Frizzy hair often needs extra moisture. Choose products that focus on nourishment, such as a rich hair mask and a deeply nourishing conditioner. Products containing oils and butters can also help to keep hair supple and hydrated.

Coloured hair

Always use a hair mask and add a repair treatment to your routine. This will help strengthen the sulphur bonds in the hair.

Use of heat

Limit the use of heat and always use a heat and UV protector with styling tools.

Basically, for all hair types, it is important to use a conditioner after washing, apply a weekly mask and choose the right hair products to keep your hair healthy and styled.

Types of hair care products for curly hair

  • Conditioner: Used after shampooing to nourish hair and close the cuticles.
  • Conditioner bar:  A solid, eco-friendly version with no plastic packaging.
  • Detangler: Helps detangle hair gently while adding protection.
  • Hair mask: The most intensive care product; use weekly with or without a shower cap.
  • Leave-in conditioner: Used after washing to protect and prep for styling, retains moisture.

How do you keep your curls moisturised?

Moisturise with products that contain humectants like water, aloe vera, and glycerin. Lock in moisture with creams or oils. A product that hydrates and seals is ideal. Use a deep conditioner (mask) weekly.

How do you prevent frizz in curly hair?

  • Use a hair mask weekly: Keeps moisture balance in check.
  • Use conditioner after shampooing: Prevents breakage and dryness.
  • Use hair oil: Seals in moisture and prevents frizz.
  • Avoid product clashes: Mix a small amount of gel and leave-in to check compatibility.
  • Use a microfibre towel: Prevents frizz from rough drying. Pat hair dry.
